Eating Out – A special meal!

Eating Out – A special meal!

Angie and I are often asked to recommend a local restaurant for a special celebration lunch or dinner so for example we confidently recommend The Elephant in Torquay, The Seahorse (particularly for fish) in Dartmouth as well as a number of others, but there’s now another which has really taken our ‘fancy’ – The Angel in Dartmouth – it is seriously good, with a really excellent young head chef.

Angie and I went there for Valentine’s night and we thoroughly enjoyed their 6 course special ‘ taster menu’ beautifully cooked and personally presented by head chef – Elly Wentworth – who at the young age of 26 has developed quite a reputation for herself being runner up in the Professionals Master Chef – 2016.

Our meal started with 2 really really delicious ‘ amuse-bouche’, one of which was a rich creamy avocado topped with caviar, and 3 unusual ‘ mini’ home baked breads. This was followed by marinated Scottish salmon served on a bed of watermelon topped with a crispy oyster for the starter. (Angie and I don’t like raw oysters – but if you’re the same as us, don’t be put off because the taste is totally different). The fish course was braised halibut, and the meat course beef fillet, both locally sourced and served with a delicious sauce/jus. We were then spoilt with 2 sweets – a buttermilk pana cotta with rose and raspberry granita and a ‘chocolate bar’ with passion fruit and banana. ( I don’t eat too many sweet things so the latter was substituted with a attractively presented plate of 6 Devon cheeses, truffle honey and sea salt rosemary crackers) – coffee and lovely Petit Fours completed the wonderful dinner

Price wise our dinner cost £70 per head – but it was Valentines night! – normally starters and sweets are around £8 – £10, with mains £25 -£30 each. Lunch costs £15/£25/£30 depending on 1 -3 courses. The Angel is open Tuesday to Saturday. Wines, to my mind, for this class of restaurant, reasonably priced – starting at £22 a bottle

Thoroughly recommended and we will be going back ! – but we’ll need to book early as its becoming understandably very popular.
