27 Feb Blackpool Sands 2023
Blackpool Sands is one of the UK’s most iconic beaches – it’s well worth a visit!
Excepting for one year when the beach was swept away in huge storms it has held the most coveted Blue Flag award since 1988.
Blackpool Sands, and the land round, has been in the same private ownership of the Newman family since 1797 – they were one of Dartmouth’s most highly esteemed merchant traders.
Besides being a very beautiful beach close to Dartmouth, Blackpool Sands has , since the 1950’s been associated with having a really special cafe. Geoffrey and Robert Newman, the current owners’ mother first made food available to the public selling teas and ice creams from a wooden hut.
A new Blackpool Sands Beach Shack opened in January selling locally roasted coffee, cakes, pies and pasties and plenty of outdoor seating with views across the beach.
The Beach Shack will be replaced by a fully refurbished takeaway opening in April with an indoor seating area available to the public. Also scheduled is a new beach shop with water sports available in May.
Throughout the summer a host of events will be staged including July’s Tunes on the Sands Music Festival on Friday 21st July and Saturday 22nd July 2023. Sam Ryder, runner up in 2022 Eurovision Song Contest will be appearing.
Two words of warning – you can’t take a dog on Blackpool Sands in the summer months and last year parking in the summer holidays cost £9 – so it’s not worth just popping in for a quick coffee!
